A crosscutting, interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program, HSD provides an intellectual core for students while encouraging them to work with other vibrant programs at ASU. Students will find natural connections to the schools, departments, and programs that house HSD faculty. There are two or more faculty members participating in the program from each of the following:
Department of History
History has over 100 graduate students who concentrate in one of four geographical areas–Europe, North America, East Asia, or Latin America. The department also offers thematic concentrations. It is the home of a one of the oldest, largest, and most diversified Public History programs in the country and a large and vibrant Preparing Future Faculty program.
School of Human Evolution and Social Change (SHESC)
SHESC is building on a strong tradition in Anthropology at ASU to create a wider community of scholars in the life sciences, social sciences, and humanities who are developing revolutionary new approaches to anthropological questions of compelling contemporary import.
Humanities and Arts, Polytechnic Campus

Through the study of history, culture, literature, politics, film, science, and economics, students learn to challenge conventional wisdom about gender. Knowledge leads to action, producing a new generation of leaders. In Fall 2007, the program launched a new Ph.D. program in gender studies.
